For sustainability managers in club sport

Reporting fan travel: Scope 3 data for your sports club

Measured shared rides to every match, a Scope 3 data package for the season and a public methodology. For football, ice hockey, basketball and handball clubs.

How do I report my club's fan travel?

You measure travel where fans organise it: every match your club plays gets its own ride board on ecoTriver, where fans offer and find seats. Every booked ride records distance and occupancy as primary data. For the matches assigned to your club console, the console totals this per match and per season and exports a Scope 3 data package as CSV or JSON, calculated with the factors listed in its emission factor register (UBA TREMOD for Germany).

Which Scope 3 category covers fan travel?

The GHG Protocol has no category designed for spectators. Clubs often assign fan travel to Category 9 (downstream transportation and distribution); others treat it by analogy with Category 7 (employee commuting) or assign it to Category 11 (use of sold products). What matters is that you document the category and the boundary. The ecoTriver data package labels the figure as spectator travel, and you or your advisers choose the category.

How measurement happens on matchday

The data comes from what fans do on matchday anyway: travel to the match. ecoTriver gives every match a ride board where solo trips become shared rides. Every booking records distance and occupancy, and the platform calculates your report's figures from them. Fans travel together and split the fuel cost; your club gets measured travel data.

  1. 1

Your matches, each with its own ride board

Every match assigned to your club console has its own event page where fans offer and look for rides.

  2. 2

    Fans travel together

Fans offer spare seats or look for a lift. A ride alert emails them as soon as a matching offer appears. Booking through ecoTriver costs nothing.

  3. 3

    Club coaches

Your club adds its own coaches to the board. Fans book the seats for free and are confirmed straight away. Each passenger's saving is the distance × (0.164 minus 0.030 kg CO₂/km): the car trip less the coach factor.

  4. 4

    Measured per ride

Every booked car ride gets its CO₂ saved from distance × 0.164 kg CO₂/km × passengers; a round trip counts the distance twice.

    Report and data package

The figures of the assigned matches feed the season report you share by link and the Scope 3 data package for your reporting.

What the Scope 3 data package contains

The data package labels every figure by its origin: measured from booked rides, or stated by fans. Section A holds the gross travel emissions per match and in total, for cars with a factor per vehicle, for coach, rail, flight and public transport per passenger-kilometre. Section B reports the emissions avoided by shared rides as an annex and never subtracts them from the inventory. The boundary, the exclusions and the emission factor register complete it.

Gross travel emissions

Per match and for the period you choose: cars with a factor per vehicle, whatever their occupancy, coach, rail, flight and public transport with factors per passenger-kilometre. This is the figure for your Scope 3 inventory.

Measured and stated, kept apart

Booked rides are primary data; journeys fans state on the event page are marked as stated. The primary-data share shows how much of the inventory is measured.

Scaling up to the attendance

With the attendance from ticket scans or turnstile counts, the package scales up to the whole crowd. The result is labelled as an estimate and leaves the measured figure unchanged.

Avoided emissions in an annex

How many fans arrived in shared cars and what that avoided, as a range between UBA average occupancy and everyone driving alone.

A disclosed boundary

It covers the journey from origin to the ground, calculated as the straight line, which is shorter than the road. Exclusions such as cancelled rides are named and counted.

What your club console shows

Your club console is where travel gets worked on. Around the matches assigned to it, and around the home and away matches of the teams linked to it, it shows how many rides are offered and requested, how many people are matched and how many kilometres are driven together. That view shows numbers, never people. You share the season report on the assigned matches by link with your board, sponsors or committees, readable without a login.

Activity around your matches

Offers, requests, matched seats and shared kilometres per day, for any period you choose.

A season report to share

A report on the assigned matches with period presets, readable through a link by anyone you send it to.

The ride board on your website

A widget shows the rides to a match right on your club website.

Roles for your team

Owners, admins, fan liaison officers and view-only members work in the same console with their own rights.

Measured live on ecoTriver

These figures come live from the ecoTriver database. They count the past events in the public archive with at least one booked ride, across concerts, festivals and sport, and show what per-ride measurement adds up to: how many people travelled together, how many kilometres they shared and how much CO₂ that saved against driving alone. The kilometres count one way; the CO₂ counts both legs of a round trip.

Tailored solutions for clubs and leagues

Every club travels differently: a basketball club with an arena in town has other routes than a football club with fans from across the region. We set ecoTriver up around your fixtures, your fans and your reporting, inside your own look if you want it. For leagues that want to look at several clubs' travel together, we talk about a shared setup. We work the details out in conversation.

How does ecoTriver calculate the CO₂ saved by a shared ride?
Per booked car ride: distance times emission factor times the number of passengers. The factor is 0.164 kg CO₂ per kilometre, the UBA TREMOD value for the average German passenger car (German Environment Agency, 2024). On club coaches each passenger saves the distance times (0.164 minus 0.030) kg CO₂ per kilometre, the car trip less the coach factor. A round trip counts the distance twice. Distance is the straight line between starting point and ground, which is shorter than the road. The comparison assumes every passenger would otherwise have driven alone; the methodology page discloses that assumption.
What about fans who don't travel with ecoTriver?
The data package reports measured journeys: booked rides and journeys fans state on the event page. For the whole crowd you enter the attendance from ticket scans or turnstile counts. ecoTriver then scales the measured emissions up by the coverage, labels the result as an estimate and leaves the measured figure unchanged. When the sample is too small for a sound projection, the package leaves the projection out and says so.
What does ecoTriver cost fans?
Nothing. Booking through ecoTriver is free for fans, and drivers and passengers split fuel and parking costs directly between themselves. Fans book seats on club coaches for free as well. That keeps the ride board open to everyone heading to your match, and every shared ride flows into your travel data.
How does ecoTriver handle fans' data?
For reporting, your console works with totals: the activity view counts offers, requests, matched seats and kilometres, and the Scope 3 data package holds figures per match and per mode. The application's database and file storage run on Supabase in the EU (Frankfurt). Fans export their data and delete their account themselves in their profile. The privacy policy lists which service providers are involved.
Can we use the data for VSME and ESRS E1?
The Scope 3 data package delivers audit-ready travel data for your Scope 3 reporting, VSME-compatible, structured along ESRS E1-6. ecoTriver acts as the supplier of the activity data: the package contains the methodology, the emission factor register, the boundary and the uncertainties. You and your auditor decide how the figures enter your sustainability report. The methodology is public and readable without a login.
How does a club get started with ecoTriver?
You book a call or request a club console through the form. We set the console up for your club and assign your matches to it, and you invite your team with their own roles. Then you link the ride board in your fan channels or embed it on your website with the widget. From the first match with booked rides, the season report and the data package fill up.
